Prostate Cancer?  It can never happen to Me. Yea Right!

Life Experience of a Cancer Scare.

August 4th 2005  7am

Today is the day to visit the doctor for the details of what is up my backside and what we can do.  Off to work until I pickup my wife and granddaughter to head for Dr Ney's office.

4pm

Per the doctor: The bad news I have cancer, the good news if there is such a thing "I have a good cancer"??! The Doc explained that we caught it very early  and it is isolated to  the Prostate. Now it is all up to me to decide what to do, I am a candidate for a variety of treatments. I must decide between being "Nuked", Freeze Dried" or "Cut up" and they all have pros and cons!  The Doc explained that if you talk to Prostate survivors you will get a different opinion in regards to there chosen treatment. Some will say "If  I did it over again I would never have Chemo, or Seed Implant or Surgery" and I would find an equal amount who felt their choice was the best decision made.   Survival rate on each is about the same for individuals with similar rated cancer.

I will try to provide links to the Medical info for the  following try this one for  now National Cancer Institute

Chemo (Nuked): The negative to this is that the radiation cold damage the bladder and rectum (All I could think of when he told me this was "Rectum Hell, It damn near Killed im"). Also if you have the chemo and it comes back you can't have the surgery it is too dangerous.

Cryo ( Freeze Dried):  The negative is  that if the cancer comes back  all you can do is keep doing the Cryo.

Surgery: ( Filleted): Pros: No more digital Prostate exams. The negative, well hell it's going to hurt, I will be out of commission for  3 - 6 weeks, I have to wear a pee bag for 10 days, a depends or male shield for up to 3 months ( if nothing goes wrong) Although the Doc says he can fix that later if it becomes an issue. There are two available surgeries, Laposcopic(sp) or the normal open you up. The first method is less invasive, the down time is less and not  to mention the pain is shorter. Bad news is that the Doc says my fat ass to height ratio is to much so they can't do the Lapo procedure. Now I can lose the 30 lbs to get back down to 210 but I don't have the time. I need to do this ASAP because my son Michael is leaving to open his  own business. We can't delay this because as soon as he signs the lease he only has 90days to  get open before the $5,000 a month lease payments starts. So that leaves me with the filleting method. Now the only hope I might have is to meet the Dr Ney's partner who does the Da Vinci procedure. Hopefully he will take into account body type and muscle mass. Thank god for my Dad's big chest, broad shoulder and back genes, otherwise I would look like the Pillsbury dough boy. Well this is where it leaves us, trying to  decide which way to go. My first thought is to set up  the appointment with his partner, because my down time is  much less even though the other negatives are the same. The next thing is to keep researching the options and make the decision. I can tell you getting Nuked is out of the question. No matter what is needs to Get R' Done now.

Like I told the Doc, my first goal is to stay alive to be with my wife, children and grand daughters. Number two I do not want to have my nick name changed from " Father Food Stain" to "Grandpa Piss Stain".

Well by now everyone on the Department I work for knows, my friends, employees at my store and the regular customers of our store. Getting the usual offers of help and prayers. They are appreciated, yet I can see this getting old pretty soon.  I'm waiting on an answer regarding the De Vinci procedure. If I can do this they are 6 weeks out. It all has to do with body fat %, and since Thursday I've dropped 6lbs. Otherwise we looking at the old fashion method late next week. It is amazing how many of my older customers have gone thru this and relate their stories to me.  It is also obvious to me the advances made in the over the last few years by simply talking with these guys.

That's it folks.

August 11th, 2005 6pm

I got some good news today from Doc. Ney. With my body type and muscle mass I only need to drop off 20lbs in order to  have the De Vinci procedure. This way my down time will only be around 2 weeks.  So fat grandpa will continue his diet that started last Thursday. I lost 6 lbs from Thurs. to yesterday now I only have the 20 to go.  No other new info.
