Life Experience of a Cancer Scare.

Everyone handles illness and crisis in different ways.  A close friend of ours called a few  months ago to say that he may have prostate Cancer. Like me he is of a grey hair and grandbaby age group. During his recent work physical his PSA Level was up and found a small growth on his prostate. It is now over three months and he has not had a biopsy. This could be because he goes to the VA for treatment, rather than a private hospital. Less than two months ago during an annual physical the doctor found my PSA Level to be a 3.57. Three weeks later the specialist ran another blood test and  found my PSA level had jumped to 4.9. I can tell you the stress level went thru the roof.  . Our friend is talking about making arrangements in case he doesn't make it and other comments such as this. The guy has a different outlook on his possible illness.  I got over being upset and went right to finding out what needs to be done if I do have Prostate Cancer.  I try to keep a positive attitude and joke my way thru this.  I went for my biopsy this past Wed. and for you guys who have not been thru it. It's not so bad. Once you get over the embarrassment of  having our butt hanging out in the wind for the world to see it's all down hill. I have to say I was a little nervous before going in, especially after the nurse told me it was a local anesthetic . I can tell you I had all kinds of vision of where the doc was going to stick the needle and they all were delicate locations.  The real deal was inserting a tube up your backside, thru this  he inserted a needle to deaden the prostate ( didn't even feel that part). Then he took a biopsy for 10 different locations. I was in and out of the office in 20 minutes and back on duty within the hour. I had a little ache internally for the next two days and that was it. The doc said  to expect some blood in my urine and sit down, but never saw any.

I try to keep my life experiences as light as possible. I called my Sergeant right after the procedure to let him know  I was back.  I told him that I was abducted by aliens and was anal probed and ask " hey boss was it wrong if I enjoyed it".  In hindsight I should  not have done that to him while he was running 75 mph down the interstate . The poor guy almost wet himself.   I still have about 4 days to wait for a verification of the diagnosis. I was a little on pins and needles. However I have a good attitude about it cause it was caught early and  Prostate Cancer is one of the easiest to fix. Besides I want to wear my hair shorter but my wife and daughter won't let me.  Well the joke may be on them. it could all fall out for a while, that will fix'em.

Keep positive and enjoy our life and family. I know  I intend spending as much time with my wife, children and beautiful grand daughters.

Mike

I will be updating this sight as I learn more about my situation. Hopefully the insights I can bring forward will make it  easier on the next guy who is uncertain as to what to expect.

August 3rd 2005

Today is the day to get the results from last weeks biopsy. I left a message with Dr Ney's nurse to just tell me one way or another.   My wife and I took off for the riverboat.   I got the call just as we are about to board. The nurse said " Sorry Mike the test shows you have Cancer".  She set an appointment for the next afternoon with the doctor. Well what a way to put a drag on a planned evening out with the wife.  My poor wife didn't take it well, where as I had already made peace with the possibility. So we have an appointment with Dr Ney at 3:15pm. My wife wanted me to wait until after this meeting to tell the two kids. I say tell them now, yet she would rather we have all the info, such has which type of cancer and I'm I going to kick off soon or is it beatable. Her evening didn't go any better, ,she couldn't find a Slot machine that would pay her.  Where as my bad luck slot machine streak came to an end.  In fact I won a nice little jackpot and mumbled under my breath "Oh the Gods are kind to Cancer Boy". So folks that's the latest if you see my kids before Thursday night keep this between us, she is the boss you know.
