Have you, a loved one or a close friend recently been diagnosed with cancer?

Than the chances are your emotions have run the full gambit of disbelief, confusion, sadness, fear and finally you got really pissed off.  I too have lived thru this and until I got to the final stage " Being  Really Pissed Off" my life was in a great turmoil.  I found once I got mad it was much easier to fight this horrible disease.  In recent short four week period our family found out that my younger sister Ingrid, age 48 has breast cancer that has migrated into her breast bone and I was diagnosed with Prostate cancer.  As upset as I  was for myself, ironically I feel fortunate that I only have prostate cancer.  I guess it is similar to the story about the man who was upset because he had no shoes until he saw a man with no feet.

You never believe that it can happen to you or your family.  You eat right, exercise. don't smoke and drink very little.  Than BAM life throws you a curve.   Get over it as soon as possible and enjoy your life.  Now is the time to get informed.  What exactly can you expect? What treatment is available and which is best for me?  Confused?  Overwhelmed?  You are not alone.  Your doctors are your best source for answers to your questions and concerns as what the hell you do next.  However, do not leave it entirely up to them, do your research as well. I hope this site will assist you in beginning your education.  Luck be with you, enjoy your Family. I spend as much time with my wife, two children and 3 grand daughters as humanly possible.

Acute myeloid Leukemia

Acute myeloid Leukemia or acute myeloid leukemia causes the bone marrow to produce a high number of immature white blood cells, known as blast cells. The bone marrow is responsible for the production of red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. However, a defective bone marrow (caused by prolonged exposure to benzene) often produces a high number of immature white cells and can therefore not produce enough healthy red and white cells or platelets.

Acute myeloid leukemia or acute myelogenous leukemia can result in tiredness, a very pale complexion, and shortness of breath. A lack of platelets can also result in excessive bleeding, a tendency to bruise easily, and a delay in healing. Not everyone that has contracted AML cancer will display all of these symptoms. In fact, some sufferers of Acute myelogenous leukemia or acute myeloid leukemia may not display any symptoms at all. It is often through blood tests that AML is detected, and this is done by the examination of bone marrow tissue and blood samples

Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia

One type of leukemia that is linked to Benzene exposure is acute lymphocytic leukemia, which is also known by a number of other names such as lymphoblastic leukemia or acute lymphoid leukemia. This is just one form of this type of cancer, with several thousand cases diagnosed every year in the United States alone. This variation is actually prevalent in children, although it can be contracted by a person of any age. Although in some cases the cause of this cancer is unknown, what is known is that it is not inherited. Also known is the fact that it can stem from exposure to toxins such as Benzene before birth or as a baby.

This type of leukemia is entails the patient’s bone marrow producing a high number of immature white blood cells, known as blast cells. The bone marrow is responsible for the production of red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. However, a defective bone marrow produces a high number of immature white cells and can therefore not produce enough healthy red and white cells or platelets. There are a number of symptoms associated with this variation of leukemia, and these include:

  • Symptoms of lack of red blood cells: tiredness, a very pale complexion, and shortness of breath.
  • Symptoms of lack of platelets: excessive bleeding, a tendency to bruise easily, and a delay in healing.
  • Symptoms of a lack of white blood cells: increased infections, bone or joint pain and discomfort, and feverishness.

Some patients may display few or none of these symptoms, and therefore it is often through blood tests that AML is detected. This is done by the examination of bone marrow tissue and blood samples.
